Anxiety Self-Help – When Anxiety Threatens to Take Over Your Life

It is normal for everybody to encounter a certain amount of anxiety in their lives at different times. Unfortunately, approximately nineteen million Americans suffer from more than just mild anxiety that is triggered by stressful events, but live in a state of constant anxiety that prohibits them from participating in regular activities. This article focuses on helping to deal with anxiety for those people who suffer from anxiety on a regular basis.

Self-Starters Made Simple

Don’t “pooh-pooh” the ideas of meditation and aromatherapy as being effective, yet simple ways to get some relief from stress and anxiety. How can you argue with a practice that has been in existence for over 4,000 years? That would be meditation, and as for aromatherapy, lavender has been used for centuries as a way to relieve a sense of tranquility. If your anxiety level rises at work, try keeping a small lavender sachet at your desk and taking a long whiff when you start feeling anxious. Combining the aromatherapy with a meditation technique will give you a fast and easy fix for stress-relief.

You Are What You Eat

One of the first elements in living a less anxious life is to eat right. Would it surprise you to know that sugar, caffeine and alcohol have all been scientifically proven to trigger anxiety and panic attacks? So, while that glass of wine at night is something you have routinely used to try to calm yourself down, avoiding it can actually lessen your level of anxiety.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, vegetables and fruits (like spinach, asparagus, avocado, beets, carrots and celery) have all been proven to mitigate anxiety. Also having a positive effect are wheat germ, wholegrain cereals, fish, eggs, molasses and garlic. So instead of reaching for the chocolate, try some of these foods to help reduce your anxiety level.

Endorphins Rock!

Those chemicals that occur naturally in our bodies to make us feel good are called endorphins, and it can be amazing at the results you will get if you get them flowing. There is no better way to do this than with regular exercise. You simply cannot ignore the overwhelming benefits of exercise, because it will not only make you feel a whole lot better by decreasing anxiety, but it will make you live longer, look better, and feel better all the way around.

Stay Away From Things That Set You Off

If it is possible to do so, then simply avoid the things and situations that you know will cause you to experience anxiety. There will, of course, be times when you cannot avoid being in stressful situations, but there will also be those that you can, with a little planning, steer clear of. Although it might not be easy, try to think of ways to avoid those situations that you know always cause you extra anxiety. Anxiety self-help is just that – you helping yourself.
