What is Liposuction Body Fat Removal

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed every year, especially in the United States, is that of liposuction. Even though most patients are women, mens liposuction is growing in popularity and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of males opting for this form of surgical process as well. Even though liposuction is used to remove unmanageable, diet resistant body fat from beneath the skin, it is not designed as a quick answer for losing weight or as an alternative to a healthy diet and exercise regime. By getting rid of the fatty deposits, liposuction helps to tone and sculpt the body.

Dependant on the volume of body fat to be removed and the part of the body to be operated on will dictate the different types of liposuction used and whether the operation is carried out in the hospital as an inpatient or in your doctor’s office as an outpatient. There are advantages and disadvantages to both but your physician will talk over all choices with you so that you can reach an informed decision, which is right for you.

Any licensed doctor like cosmetic surgeons or, in some cases, dermatologists, can perform liposuction procedures because there are no standard training requirements needed in order for a doctor to carry out the operation. Because of this, you will likely come across varying degrees of experience and training when looking for a cosmetic surgeon. You should therefore ask questions of your preferred physician in respect of their experience in the field and whether they have undergone any special training. Even though liposuction is classed as an elective surgical procedure, it is no less serious than any other invasive operation.

Out of all the procedures performed, liposuction abdominoplasty, also known simply as adominoplasty, is one of the most common. It is popular among folk who have been left with an excess of stretched skin because of either large loss of weight or, in the case of women, pregnancy. In some cases, the procedure is performed on health grounds on people who are morbidly overweight. In the case of pregnancy, physicians will advise women to wait until after their childbearing days are over. The reason for this is that the muscles that are tightened during liposuction can separate again should the woman become pregnant. Moreover, there is a possibility that the tightened muscles could restrict the development of the fetus.

Pain and a certain amount of soreness are to be expected after all surgeries and liposuction is no different. Although normal, there is a chance of  some drainage from the incisions after surgery and your doctor may suggest putting in a drainage tube for a couple of days to avoid fluid build-up. The length of liposuction recovery is not the same for everyone. However, being clear on the potential problems before the surgery and following your physicians instructions afterwards, can go a long way toward decreasing your discomfort.
